What you Never Wanted to Know About Cockroaches

21 Mar 2016

You see them scatter when the lights go on. You can find them in your garbage can, your bathroom and kitchen. Having an infestation of cockroaches in your house is not something you will ever get used to or enjoy. One of the biggest problems that come from cockroaches is they are a reservoir of potential diseases.

The Disease Reservoir

Cockroaches have a varied diet. They can eat anything from cardboard and glue to human fecal material. They spend a lot of time around garbage and other forms of waste. In all of these circumstances cockroaches pick up diseases on their bodies, then run across your kitchen table and get into your food.

  • Bacteria: One study revealed that the body of a cockroach contains over 30 different bacteria that can potentially make you sick. Ever heard of E. coli? Cockroaches can transmit that as well as Salmonella, Staphylcoccous, Mycobacterium leprae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These bacteria cause everything from infections and Leprosy to food poisoning.
  • Parasites: The body of a cockroach carries the unhatched eggs of parasites. When a cockroach gets into the food you will soon be eating, the parasite eggs can fall off. When you eat the contaminated food, the eggs hatch and you could be the unlucky recipient of a parasite. You can get roundworms, pinworms, hookworms or threadworms because you unknowingly shared a meal with a cockroach.
  • Viruses: If parasites and bacteria weren’t enough, cockroaches can also transmit viruses. Polio, you read right, Polio and Hepatitis have both been spread by the cockroach.
  • Dead insect skin: In order to grow, cockroaches shed their skin. When this insect skin becomes airborne, you breathe it in. For most people this isn’t a problem, if you suffer from asthma, it can trigger severe reactions.
