Are Ants Dangerous to Humans?

29 Aug 2016

If you’ve ever been the unfortunate victim of an ant bite, you know very well how unpleasant it is. It’s a sudden and surprising pinch that comes out of nowhere. Depending on the type of ant, that pinch can continue to sting or burn for awhile too. It is uncomfortable but are ant stings dangerous? Can many ant bites actually harm a person? When an ant bites, it releases acid from its jaws that produces that obnoxious burning sensation. One bite may not be much of a problem, but if you have an ant infestation, many bites can be hazardous.

Which Ants to Watch out for

There are many dangerous, even deadly ants in the world but thankfully, most of them don’t live in the US. For instance the bull ant and meat eating ant are primarily found in Australia or the green tree or saifu ants which are found in Asia. The Florida harvester ant however, is of course found in the United States and as its name suggests is found in Florida. The bite can be excruciating and there have been deaths attributed to their bite. The ants you might find around are black ants and their powerful jaws can deliver a painful sting. When an ant infests, it increases your chances that you will be bitten.

The Body’s Reaction to Ant Stings

The acid an ant injects when it bites has a range of different reactions based on the type of ant, the age of the person and the number of bites. A minimal reaction is usually redness or swelling around the sting site. A severe reaction can result in anaphylaxis. This response happens within a short time after exposure to the allergen. Whether it’s one bite or fifty, it is important to watch for the signs of an allergic reaction after ant bites. These include:

  • Sneezing
  • Wheezing
  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Chest tightness
  • Itching or swelling of any body parts
  • Rapid loss of blood pressure
  • Fainting
  • And more…

While anaphylaxis is not very common with ant bites, it is a good idea to monitor a person, especially a young child or elderly person, who has been bitten by ants multiple times. If any of these symptoms are exhibited, immediate medical attention is necessary.
